Hillel Academy's 5th-8th grade curriculum is designed to promote academic growth and personal development. Students strengthen their skills in language arts, math, science, and social studies, with a focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications. They explore Jewish studies and Hebrew, deepening their connection to Jewish history, traditions, and Israel. Hands-on learning, inquiry-based projects, and social-emotional development are integral parts of the program, encouraging students to become independent, responsible learners. This approach prepares students for future academic success and personal growth.

6th-8th graders at Hillel Academy participate in a transformative retreat where they strengthen their bonds with one another and deepen their connection to their Jewish identity. Through outdoor activities, team-building exercises, and meaningful discussions, students develop leadership skills, foster a sense of community, and reflect on their personal growth.

Students are introduced to the concept of global citizenship, learning to appreciate cultural diversity, understand global issues, and recognize their role in contributing to a more connected and responsible world.

In 5th grade, students expand their knowledge and skills across a range of subjects. In reading and writing, they focus on improving comprehension, analyzing texts, and writing structured essays, with attention to grammar and vocabulary. In math, they work on multiplication and division of larger numbers, fractions, decimals, and geometry, applying these concepts to real-world problems. These concepts and others begin to develop the essential foundation that will lead to future success in Algebra and Geometry.

In science, students begin to engage in lessons and experiments in our state-of-the-art middle school science lab, where they explore topics such as the properties of matter, ecosystems, and the solar system through hands-on experiments and projects. Social studies focuses on U.S. history, geography, and the foundations of government, helping students understand the history and structure of their country.

In Hebrew and Jewish Studies, students deepen their understanding of Jewish history, traditions, and texts, while also improving their Hebrew reading, writing, and conversation skills. Students also continue to develop social-emotional skills, with an emphasis on communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution, preparing them for greater independence and responsibility in their academic and personal lives.

Special highlights include Jewish Heritage Projects, where students explore Jewish history, traditions, and customs through research and creative presentations; Community Service Initiatives that promote Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), fostering a sense of social responsibility. Previous overnight trips have included Busch Gardens & Disney, where students learn about the mechanics of roller coasters and gain behind-the-scenes insights into engineering and design.

6th grade at Hillel Academy fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and the application of knowledge, setting students up for future academic and personal growth.

In 6th grade at Hillel Academy, students build on their academic foundation and tackle more complex subjects. In reading and writing, they focus on analyzing literature, writing essays, and developing critical thinking skills. They work on improving organization, argumentation, and vocabulary while engaging in various forms of writing, such as persuasive and narrative essays. In 6th-grade math, we begin an even more intentional focus on meeting the unique needs of each student, creating a learning trajectory that builds on their strengths and lays a solid foundation for future success. Students explore a range of Pre-Algebra and foundational concepts, applying their knowledge to solve real-world problems and setting them on a strong and confident path for future math studies.

In science, the Smithsonian Science curriculum guides them through Earth and space science, including geology, weather, and the solar system, with hands-on experiments and projects. Social studies introduces students to ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, examining their cultures, governments, and contributions to modern society. In Jewish Studies and Hebrew, students expand their understanding of Jewish history, customs, and values, while continuing to develop Hebrew language skills in reading, writing, and conversation.

Additionally, social-emotional learning helps students develop skills in communication, conflict resolution, and empathy, preparing them for more independence and responsibility as they transition into middle school. Students also begin learning Spanish, developing foundational language skills in speaking, reading, and writing. They engage in unique electives such as digital storytelling, robotics, and piano, allowing them to explore creativity, technology, and teamwork in innovative ways.

Special highlights include engaging cultural immersion experiences in Spanish, such as preparing a traditional Spanish meal or participating in a Spanish-language theater performance; learning Torah trope, mastering the melody and rhythm for chanting Torah portions, which strengthens their connection to Jewish tradition; and a field trip to Disney to explore the innovative technology behind the magic, learning about CGI, motion capture, and advanced tech in theme park attractions, which ties into their studies of animation and engineering.

We set students up for success in both their studies and life skills, fostering confidence and a deep connection to their academic and personal development.

In 7th grade at Hillel Academy, students continue to build on their academic foundation while tackling more complex subjects. They benefit from differentiated math and language arts groups, where students are grouped based on their proficiency level to ensure they are appropriately challenged. In reading and writing, students analyze literature in depth, exploring themes, character development, and literary techniques. They enhance their writing skills by crafting essays, research papers, and creative pieces, with an emphasis on argumentation, structure, and style. In math, students build on their 6th-grade foundations as they study Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, depending on their unique learning paths.

In science, students delve into topics such as biology, the human body, genetics, and ecosystems, conducting experiments and engaging in hands-on projects that emphasize critical thinking and the scientific method. Social studies introduces world history, exploring ancient civilizations, geography, and the cultural and political developments that shaped the modern world. In Jewish studies, students study Jewish history, customs, and Torah texts, deepening their connection to Jewish values and traditions.

Students also continue to develop their Hebrew language skills, strengthening their ability to read, write, and converse through leveled Hebrew groups that ensure personalized instruction. The school offers a variety of electives, including music, art, technology, and physical education, allowing students to explore their interests and talents. Additionally, social-emotional learning focuses on building leadership, conflict resolution, and self-awareness skills, preparing students for the challenges of adolescence.

7th grade at Hillel Academy is a year of academic challenge, self-discovery, and personal growth, with a focus on differentiation and individualized instruction. Special highlights include a memorable trip to Washington, D.C., offering students a hands-on experience in American history and government; a study of Jewish ethics and values, deepening their understanding of their faith and how it applies to everyday life; and a leadership role in organizing and participating in the Veterans Day program, fostering respect and appreciation for service.

In 8th grade at Hillel Academy, students continue to build on their academic foundations while preparing for high school.

Eighth grade at Hillel Academy is a pivotal year of academic and personal growth, designed to prepare students for the challenges of high school and beyond. In language arts, students delve into advanced literature analysis, exploring complex novels and plays with a focus on themes, symbolism, and critical thinking. Writing skills are honed through argumentative essays, research projects, and creative writing, emphasizing structure, style, and coherence.

In math, students continue their studies by tackling high-school-level coursework in either Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2, giving students a strong foundation on which to build as they prepare for the transition to high school. Science lessons explore high-school-level physical science concepts as students incorporate hands-on experiments and scientific methods to deepen understanding and prepare for continued advanced studies. Social studies focus on U.S. history, examining major events, movements, and figures, while also exploring geography's influence on world events. Jewish studies integrate lessons on Jewish law, ethics, and history, fostering connections to students' lives and Jewish identity. Hebrew studies continue to strengthen reading, writing, and conversational skills, building fluency.

Unique to eighth grade, students participate in internships that provide real-world experience and develop professional skills, giving them insight into future career interests. Social-emotional learning emphasizes leadership, self-awareness, and preparing for the transition to high school.

The year culminates in a transformative 10-day Jewish heritage trip. While students historically traveled to Israel, recent events have prompted alternative plans. As we continue to pray for the opportunity to return to our homeland in 2024, students have embraced meaningful journeys to other significant Jewish cultural sites. This past year, they explored the rich Jewish heritage of Spain, and this May, they will embark on an inspiring journey to Prague, delving into the profound history and legacy of Jewish communities around the world.
