The Hillel Primary Division is housed in its own building on Hillel Academy’s 10-acre campus. The Primary Division includes transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade.
Our kindergarten classes offer a good entry point for children as they adjust to an academic setting. Even at this early age, our transitional and full-time kindergarten students are exposed to language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
Additionally, students also spend time on activities involving art, music, library, computers, and physical education. Both transitional and full-time kindergarten students spend one formal period each day on Jewish studies.
By the end of kindergarten, most of our students have very strong reading skills, setting them up for success as they enter first grade.
Our first graders build on the language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science skills that they learned in kindergarten. By the end of first grade, nearly all of our students are independent readers and writers. Most are also able to read Hebrew.
At the first grade level, students also receive more exposure to art, music, library, computers, and physical education. Additionally, in first grade, Jewish studies expands from one period to two. At Hillel Academy, we believe in individualized and integrated learning. Our Primary Division students work in reading and math groups to better facilitate learning. We also individualize learning plans to best fit the needs of the student.
In math, we use the Singapore Math curriculum, as we believe it bests prepares Primary Division students for more rigorous studies at the higher levels. Our social studies and science lesson plans are thematic. In all subjects, we encourage our students to ask questions, be curious, and investigate how the different aspects of their world are connected.
